Music. [myoo-zik]
–noun
1.
an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions insignificant forms through the elements of rhythmmelody, harmony, and colour.
2.
the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line(melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to besounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both.
3.
musical  work or compositions for singing or playing.

Ignore the cliché and cheeky use of definition, but music is one medium that I can definitely and comfortably express my emotions through. My parents have never been more than averagely in tune with music. With my Dad clapping to Freddy Mercury's "Queen"  whilst chanting "We will..we will.." and my Mum tapping her fingers on the steering wheel to the famous drum solo of Phil CoIlins' "In the air tonight", it was never the worst foundation to build my musical repertoire on but it was never the most rounded. However I discovered music myself at the age of eight when I decided that I wanted to play guitar.

Learning how to play the guitar is one thing I am very proud of and cherish to this day. When life's strains and pains take toll on the mind, picking up my beautiful solid mahogany Martin & Co. guitar and having an hour of majors to minors and sharps to flats, provides me with something that nothing else can. Expression of my deepest thoughts that no other medium can provide.

"Symphony of Sweat"..
Here's nitty gritty details of what makes me tick, literally provides the rhythm for my sinoatrial node to send electrical impulses through the cardiac muscle and cause my heart to contract. This shit keeps me alive, these people are legit and rock my socks.

Influential Genius'

City & Colour
City and Colour is the recording alias for Canadian singer-songwriter Dallas Green, who is also the guitarist and vocalist of the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire who very recently broke up. He plays melodic acoustic and folk music and accompanies it with the most beautiful male voice ever recorded. I discovered him on YouTube a few years ago and still to this day, he makes the hairs on my neck stand up. He is one of the most under rated musicians that I've come across. One thing that really pisses me off is that "artists" such as Cher Lloyd etc who have no musical talent, are chosen to sing songs written by people with real emotions and get number ones just because they're more marketable. Music should be real. Dallas consistently writes, composes, plays and delicately puts together melodies that are spine tingling and in my eyes if anyone is my idol, Dallas Green is it, alongside Rich Froning Jr of course. Listen to him, share him, get him some noise because this guy deserves it.

Mumford & Sons
Mumford & Sons are an indie, folk rock band from England, and I can admit that proudly. I've had the opportunity to see Mumford play live at Leeds Festival last summer and its a memory I will never forget. Many of their songs are influenced by books which I adore such as Shakepeare's 'Macbeth' and John Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men'. If you get the opportunity to see them live, don't miss it! For now, if you haven't already listened to them then you need to hear their only released album "Sigh No More".

Mumford & Sons - White Blank Page

Bon Iver
Nothing I could say for Bon Iver will do them justice but what the hell, here it goes. So Bon Iver are again an indie folk band but this time from across the pond in the US of A and damn I'd be proud if they British. Personally, their first album 'For Emma, Forever Ago' blew my mind and my musical interests altogether. Their self-titled latest album has seen some rave reviews and many of my friends like it but it misses the rawness of songs like Skinny Love. Without Bon Iver providing the opportunity to listen to something outside of the box and broadening my horizons, I don't think I'd appreciate the music that I do now. So Bon Iver, thank you.

  1. Mike, thanks for these tunes. I can't wait to put a few new cds together - I already know Young the Giant "I Got" is going to be great for camping roadtrip to the mountains this weekend! All the best from a Canadian Crossfitter who shares the same passion for music!
